The 70s dinner is back – are you ready? Hosting at Home to Boom as Lockdown Release

The new firm ‘Setting Pretty’ is launched with the best tips for hosting

LONDON: Stephanie Bloom and Julie Darwent announce today the official launch of their business, Setting Pretty, an online store that offers a variety of table settings and accessories designed for home entertainment.

Other countries that have begun to loosen their locks, such as New Zealand, have enjoyed a boom in dinner. Commentators in the UK expect a similar revival of dinner as people avoid restaurants in favor of entertainment in smaller groups at home.

Setting Pretty, designed in early 2019, aims to take advantage of this trend. It offers a range of affordable, coordinated and complementary products, including tablecloths, runners, napkins and rugs, as well as accessories such as candles and candle holders – ‘everything you need to create an elegant but comfortable table’ – all delivered to your door .

Founding partners Bloom and Darwent offer excellent tips for this new type of hosting:

  1. “The invitation: One of the most important things as a host is to make your guests feel comfortable. Everyone has different levels of comfort when it comes to social distance. Your invitation should make it clear to your guests who is being invited, where you are meeting (outside in your garden) and how you plan to distance yourself socially.
  2. Sketch the scene: Compile everything ahead of time. We colored our place settings and gave each couple a color so they know where to sit — each tray is filled with cocktails at each couple’s seat.
  3. Self-service bar or buffet: With stations, your guests can easily and safely access their favorite drinks or food. Prepare in advance with recyclable individual water bottles, pre-made cocktails and disinfectant.
  4. Easy access: Make sure access to your home, garden and guest bathroom is free and clear. We filled our disposable towels and disinfectant. ”

Bloom explains the idea behind the online business: ‘I’ve always loved to entertain, to create a welcoming environment, and friends always asked me for advice or wanted me to style their parties. Julie and I realized that there is a gap in the market for affordable, elegant environments that were not so expensive that you only used them for special occasions, but also were not cheap, flimsy or disposable.

The 100% cotton products contain no plastic or fiberglass and are handmade by small manufacturers in India. They are designed to be easy to use, durable and easy to care for (all can be machine washed). The site is divided into mood-based collections such as The Wild Child, The Modernist and the Romantic, which make coordination simple and gift sets available.

Founding partner Darwent adds: ‘As someone who grew up in the restaurant industry, my heart breaks for the industry, but I’m afraid customers will be nervous about returning too soon. I think we will see more dinners, more small gatherings in people’s homes and gardens, or in parks and on the beach. But more than ever, people will want to make these meals feel cheerful and inviting – and our settings are perfect for that, whether it’s a dinner, adding a little color to a picnic or just a potty dinner with friends’ a little more special. ”

Bloom has a background in fashion and accessories – after interning with Donna Karan in New York before training as a physiotherapist – while Darwent, a former city financier, grew up in the restaurant business with her family running a chain of Italian restaurants in operating her home country. Manhattan. A shared interest in art and love of entertaining family and friends inspired them to create Setting Pretty.
