Cristian Măcelaru will remain the conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra for another three years until 2025

Cristian Măcelaru extends his contract as principal conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra by another three years. The WDR administration noted and approved the postponement on Friday, June 26th. This means that this rising star will be at the head of the WDR’s top orchestra among the conductors of the next generation at least until 31 July 2025.

During his initial contract as principal conductor with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, Cristian Măcelaru established an international reputation as a top conductor. “During his inaugural concert in September 2019, he won the hearts of the public with his expressiveness. Admired by the media as well as professional music critics, Cristian Măcelaru was a driving force for innovation for our orchestra, while at the same time being a professional communicator who also knows how to play on the internet keyboard, “says Valerie Weber, program director of WDR.” With his personality and an exceptionally broad repertoire ranging from Bach to contemporary music, he had such a convincing impression in his first year made us want to keep him longer in North Rhine-Westphalia and with our orchestra. “

Forty-year-old Cristian Măcelaru is looking forward to the upcoming season, as global concert and cultural life is confronted with new challenges in the corona time. The Romanian-born conductor is very interested in integrating symphonic music into the digital media — from live concerts to musical introductions via video. “Being on stage with the excellent musicians of the WSO is always stimulating, while at the same time being a meaningful discovery of the most diverse musical opportunities,” he says. ‘I am very happy that we will continue to create many beautiful moments for our faithful audience, give timeless musical masterpieces new life and the artistic partnerships that make the WDR Symphony Orchestra one of the best orchestras in Germany and the world as a whole. “

Cristian Măcelaru has gained a reputation with major orchestras in the United States and in Europe, including conducting the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestra. He has a particularly close relationship with the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he has performed on more than 150 concerts. He has also received invitations from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Leipzig’s Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Orchester National de France and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He is working with the WDR Symphony Orchestra for the first time in February 2017. Cristian Măcelaru’s dedication as music director for the renowned Orchester National de France from the 2021/22 season underlines his artistic relevance. At the end of 2019, he will receive a prestigious Grammy Award for his recording on CD of Wynton Marsalis’ Violin Concerto.
