Five-time Asian medalist Shiva Thapa (63.5kg) kicked in the pre-quarterfinals with a knockout, but the former bronze medalist of the world championship, Gaurav Bidhuri (57kg), after a loss in the first round in the men’s national boxing championships on Friday. Thapa, who represents Assam, knocked out Shubham Mamta of Steel Plant Sports Board (SPSB) in the opening round of his match. Shubham was picked up by the medical team after the body shot pulled him out of the ring. “There is pain, but he has to recover. He will be judged again tomorrow ‘, a top official at the tournament told PTI.
However, Bidhuri (Railways Sports Promotion Board) was set up by Haryana’s Sachin, who won 4-1.
Another Haryana pugilis and South Asian Games champion Ankit Khatana advanced to the 75kg quarterfinals after beating Himhal Pradesh’s Dharm Pal in unanimous victory.
Telangana’s Savio Dominic Michael (54kg) and Goa’s Ashok Patil (67kg) also advanced to the final eighth stage with identical 4-1 victories.
While Savio defeated the Krishna Jora of Jharkhand, Ashok Patil prevailed over Himachal Pradesh’s Mohan Chander. Chandigarh’s Kuldeep Kumar (48kg) and Sachin were one of the other boxers who could progress on the third day of the championships.
Kuldeep booked a place in the quarterfinals after an easy 4-0 victory over Rajsthan’s Sushil Sahran.
In the 75kg category, Maharashtra pugilis Nikhil Dubey continued his excellent race in the tournament and advanced to the quarterfinals. He beat the Venu Mandala of Telangana with a verdict of ‘RSC’ (referee stopping the match) in a final 16 match.
The gold medalist of this event will take on the Indian team for the world championships in Belgrade next month.
