With the resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2021, David Hussey, head mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), praised Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana for their performances for the team. The KKR opening duo is crucial this year for the ambition of the franchise in the UAE. Hussey said the duo ‘could shock the world’ with their exhibitions. Hussey said during a pre-season interview with kkr.in: “Both quality players. Both quality people. Both are determined to do very well for this team and themselves. Both have a taste of international cricket and I think they are on the point of shocking the world that they are the next generation of Indian players. ”
“Not just for one or two series. They’ve been there for a decade. If they get going, look out for us at the IPL,” he added.
Gill was not at his best during the first half of the season, scoring only 132 runs in seven games, with a high score of 43. Despite his irregular form in IPL 2021, he was a regular mainstay in the Indian test team. He was part of the starting XI during the last defeat of India’s World Test Championship (WTC) against New Zealand.
The 22-year-old had to pull out of the English tour due to a developing stress reaction on his left leg that he suffered during the WTC final.
On the other hand, Rana is currently KKR’s highest scorer this season, with 201 out of seven games. He also scored a high of 80.
The 27-year-old was recently nominated in India’s T20I and ODI groups for their Sri Lanka tour, led by Shikhar Dhawan. He was part of a one-day race and two T20Is.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) kick off the season’s UAE leg on September 19 in Dubai. Meanwhile, KKR will resume their campaign on September 20 when they take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
