Samuel Eto’o will play in the December election for the presidency of the Cameroonian Football Federation, the former Barcelona star said on Wednesday. The role of soccer head in the country that would host the Africa Cup of Nations in January became vacant when incumbent Seidou Mbombo Njoya canceled his term of office by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Eto’o supported Mbomo’s election campaign, but two years after retiring from the game, the 40-year-old says his passion for the game is driving him back.
“I am honored and pleased to announce my candidacy for the presidency of the Cameroonian Football Federation. After careful consideration, I have decided to take this initiative out of love for Cameroon and out of passion for our football,” Eto’o said on social media said.
“It will be an honor to be the service of the company that has given me all the praise I have received so far.
“Waiting is not an option. It’s time to rebuild our football. We can no longer slow down the refurbishment of our number one sport because the rest of the world is going on; it is progressing without us.”
