Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) opener Venkatesh Iyer continued from where he left off in the previous game against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) when he returned to his second consecutive fifties of the second phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. He scored 53 runs from just 30 balls against a strong Mumbai Indians (MI) bowling team, something that received praise from former cricketers like Irfan Pathan and Matthew Hayden. Irfan stressed at Star Sports’ post-match match that Iyer did not sit on his laurels against RCB, but played with the same mindset and reappeared against Jasprit Bumrah and company.
“In the first game he showed a lot of character. He also showed some shots, coverage and all. But there is always a question about you as a young player, what is going to happen in the next game. Who is it going to happen? “Is it the same guy who shows up?” he said.
Irfan also praised the character Iyer displayed while tackling world-class pacers Bumrah and Trent Boult.
“He did it, he actually showed up better, especially against Bumrah, against Boult. Against the Mumbai Indians he showed a lot of character. There is a lot more we are going to see in the future of Venkatesh Iyer,” he explained.
Iyer also impressed former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden.
“He got permission from his mother to play cricket. Great stuff, because let’s face it guys, we’re all a mom’s boys,” Hayden said.
KKR achieves a comfortable victory of seven wickets when they chased the target of 156 with 29 balls.
KKR plays on September 26 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
