Daniel Maldini will relive a long-standing family tradition on Saturday when he A League fit for AC Milan for the first time. More than 12 years since his father, club legend Paolo, last played for the seven-time European champions, Maldini junior takes his place in the starting XI in Spezia. The former defender of Italy Paolo Maldini, who has won almost every honor in the match during his 25 years as a Milan player, will be watching his striker’s son from the stands as he has been the club’s technical director for the past two years.
The 19-year-old Maldini will also emulate his grandfather, Cesare Maldini, who won four league titles and the 1963 European Cup for the Rossoneri, when he joins returning center-forward Olivier Giroud.
Daniel made his senior debut in Milan as a late substitute in a 1-1 draw with Verona in February last year, and has since played in a bunch of games off the bench.
He made his Milan debut in their Europa League qualifier against Rio Ave next October and has appeared as a substitute three times this season, including seven minutes at the end of a 3-2 defeat at Liverpool earlier this month.
Milan sit third in Serie A after its match in Spezia, two points behind Serie A leaders Napoli and equal to city rivals Inter Milan, who host Atalanta on Saturday night.
