Delhi Capitals are just one win away from sealing a playoff spot in IPL 2021, and if they do, it will be the third season that Ricky Ponting coach will score in the final four. The franchise, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, improved rapidly and reached its first IPL final last season, which eventually went to the Mumbai Indians in the top flight. The team scaled new heights under the leadership of the young Shreyas Iyer. But the middle-order batsman was ruled out of the initial phase of the season, which was played in India in April-May, due to the shoulder injury. In his absence, wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant got the top spot and the batsman reacted in style as he led the team to the top position, before the league was postponed due to the devastating second wave of Covid-19 earlier in India this year.
The league started again in the UAE earlier this month and this enabled Iyer to rejoin the team after being fit again. However, the franchise decided to continue with Pant as captain for the rest of the season, and the performances were as good as in the first half. Delhi got the chance to book their place in the play-offs on Tuesday, but a loss to Kolkata Knight Riders means they will have to wait longer.
Captain Rishabh Pant scored a steady 39 against KKR, breaking a long-standing record of former DC captain and team-mate India legend Virender Sehwag in the middle. Sehwag was long the highest run for the franchise, with 2382 runs in 85 overs. Pant passed Sehwag on Tuesday and now leads the rankings with 2390 runs in 75 overs. Pant has so far registered a century and 14 fifties for the franchise. During his stay in DC, Sehwag hit a century and 17 fifties.
Shreyas Iyer is currently in third place with 2291 runs for the franchise in 82 overs. But the man who has been in excellent shape since joining the franchise is Shikhar Dhawan. The veteran opener, who has spent most of his IPL career at Sunrisers Hyderabad, has returned to DC a few seasons ago and has been furious ever since.
Dhawan is currently in fourth place, having scored 1933 runs for the franchise in just 58 overs, with a whopping 40.27 average. The DC team management hopes that the triumvirate of Dhawan, Iyer and Pant can shoot the rest of the tournament on all cylinders and lead the franchise to their first IPL title.
