Keller was a member of the U.S. swimming team for three of the Olympic competitions from 2000 to 2008, during which he won five medals. He won two gold medals when he competed in the 800 meter freestyle with teammates Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Peter Vanderkaay at the Athens Olympics and 2008 in Beijing. The 2004 relay has since been named the Race of the Century.
After his time in the Olympic team, Keller experienced adversity in his personal life, after being divorced from his wife in 2014.
In 2018, he said USA swimming that he struggled to pay child support and lived out of his Ford Fusion, explaining: ‘I did not know where to go because I did not really know where to go, so I just traveled to the most important people to see life in me, seeking advice and guidance. ”
‘Within a few years, I passed from the Olympic gold medalist to my husband, homeowner, husband with a range of sales positions – life insurance, software, medical equipment, financial products – and a father of three; time to accept who I was without swimming in my life, ”he told the organization at the time. “Swimmer was my identity most of my life, and then I quickly switched to other roles and never gave myself time to feel comfortable with it. I really struggled with things. I did not enjoy my job, and the unhappiness and lack of identity began to creep into my marriage. ”
