Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was seventh on the Indian Premier League (IPL) standings 2021 after the first half of the tournament. The franchise in Kolkata found their mojo in the UAE when they achieved two major victories to climb the points ladder and keep their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive. One of the keys to this turnaround was their new opening batsman Venkatesh Iyer, who not only had a good start but also broke in with the ball in the middle overs. Impress with Venkatesh Iyer’s overall performance, the former victim of India, Sanjay Manjrekar, believes the KKR youngster can achieve a ‘very high price’ in the upcoming IPL auction.
“I think of 12-14 crores because it’s not some kind of casual performance. I looked at his first-class figures and his List A record is excellent. His average is 47, hitting 92 (98). Then is his T20 record in domestic cricket but does not count the IPL. in the last game, he showed that he can also bowl the difficult overs. That is why he is someone who will fetch a very high price, ” Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.
The 26-year-old victim of Madhya Pradesh made his IPL debut in the second half of the 2021 season and scored more than 200 runs in six matches. Venkatesh Iyer also took three wickets at an economy rate of less than nine per innings.
Manjrekar said Venkatesh Iyer looks like a ‘really qualified game changer’.
“Today I focused on the way he bats. Very interesting, he bats a lot on the back foot. Looks like pulling, playing the cut. So it’s a victim who does not want to go off the field and forces everything. “He stays on his feet, cuts and pulls, and then he has a big step forward. I see him more as a truly qualified T20 changer than someone who has had some good weeks,” Manjrekar added.
