Jemimah Rodrigues smashed a stylish 49 off 36 balls before the sky opened to leave the first Women’s T20 International between India and Australia Thursday in Queensland. India scored a quick cut of 131 for 4 in 15.2 overs, and it was a total of about 165 plus, when heavy rain raised hopes of a full game. For the Indian team, however, their positive approach to batting was a welcome change, with Smriti Mandhana (17 off 10 balls) and Shafali Verma (18 off 14 balls) making a brilliant start.

It was a rare occasion when Australia conceded more than 50 runs in the Powerplay overs, as Indian batsmen never lost the pace, although apart from Jemimah, none of the other top-order players could convert their start .

Jemimah’s innings had seven boundaries and she was with the solid Richa Ghosh (17 off 13 balls) at the time of the disruption.

The match started with Shafali Verma cutting Tayla Vlaeminck over the lids for a six-pointer, while Smriti Mandhana converted into Sophie Molineux when the duo added 31 runs for the opening table.

Mandhana hit a high ramp and also a whip shot. Both were quickly dismissed in succession and captain Harmanpreet broke three boundaries in her short stay before Jemimah reached the middle stage with some good shots on the outside.

She starts with a whip from a Molineux delivery, then cuts off left-arm spinner Ashleigh Gardener, while pacemaker Hannah Darlington, in her only over, falls for two boundaries over the middle of the air.

Jemimah has pulled very flat in the past past due to her persistent failures and also lost her first XI spot in the 50 over.

In ‘The Hundred’, however, the 21-year-old Mumbaikar lost her contact again with scores of 92 off 43 balls, 60 off 41 balls and 57 off 44 balls for the Northern Super Chargers.

Once Yastika Bhatia (15) was weak, Richa came in and hit three boundaries from Tahlia McGrath to get the score past 130 points.
