India will have to wait as a teenager for its first women’s world wrestling champion Anshu Malik won a silver medal after losing her 57 kg final on Thursday against Olympic champion Helen Lousie Marouli in Oslo, Norway. The 19-year-old started in an aggressive way with a positive intention, after becoming India’s first women finalist at the World Cup. She took a 1-0 lead, but the game changed dramatically in the second. Maroulis grabbed Anshu in her arm and pulled her down to take a step to take a 2-1 lead. She held Anshu’s right arm under a tight grip and kept turning to get an ‘exposure’ point, and it was 4-1.

Anshu, the reigning Asian champion, was in terrible pain, but the American did not loosen her grip and had Anshu’s back on the mat to win by fall.

Anshu needed immediate medical attention after the attack because she was almost in tears.

It was nonetheless a heroic performance by the Nidani wrestler, who became the only fifth Indian woman to win a world medal and so far the best one.

Geeta Phogat (2012), Babita Phogat (2012), Pooja Dhanda (2018) and Vinesh Phogat (2019) each won a bronze.

Meanwhile, Divya Kakran (72kg) lost her rematch against Davaanasan Enkh Amar in Mongolia in the morning session, and the Greco-Roman wrestlers were expected to put on a disappointing performance.

Sandeep (55kg), Vikas (72kg), Sajan (77kg) and Harpreet Singh (82kg) bow out of the competition.

Only Sajan managed to win one match, while the other three won their respective openers.
