South Africa beat West Indies by 8 wickets in their second game of the continued T20 World Cup 2021 Tuesday in Dubai. Chase the target of 144 runs Aiden Markram scored 51 runs using 2 fours and 4 sixes. Markram stitched an unbeaten partnership of 83 runs with Rassie van der Dussen (43 *) around the third wicket. Reeza Hendrick also played an important role in South Africa’s chase, scoring 39 runs while opening the batting. Meanwhile, the versatile West Indies player Andre Russell put in an excellent performance in the field to outplay Proteas captain Temba Bavuma in the first over of the chase. Bavuma pushed Akeal Hosein’s carrom ball into the middle and went for a risky single, but Russell quickly picked up the ball and hit the ball to get the opening out.

ICC shared a video of Bavuma’s run on their Instagram handle and captioned it as: “Calamity for South Africa in the first bout. Skipper, Temba Bavuma is on his way to a direct hit from Andre Russell.”

Earlier, while batting first, the West Indies scored a total of 143 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Evin Lewis scored the best score for the Caribbean team with his 56 runs.

Pacer Dwaine Pretorius was the most successful bowler for South Africa when he took three wickets in two overs towards the end. Keshav Maharaj took two wickets while Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje each got one wicket. Nortje gave only 14 runs in his four innings and he was also named player of the match for his economic bowling against the two-time champions.

With this victory, South Africa moved up to fourth place in Group 1 points ladder and is tied with England, Australia and Sri Lanka on two points. However, the English team led by Eoin Morgan is in first place with a much better net run rate. South Africa will now face Sri Lanka in their third match of the tournament on Saturday.

On the other hand, it was the second consecutive defeat for the defending champions West Indies and they have three games left in their campaign. To qualify for the semifinals, the team led by Kieron Pollard must make the most of their remaining matches. West Indies will face Bangladesh next Friday.
