T20 World Cup: Sri Lanka ready to unleash Man Of Mystery Maheesh Theekshana on Australia

Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana will try to bring Australia to the T20 World Cup 2021 Thursday with coach Mickey Arthur supporting the 21-year-old to “ask questions”. Theekshana bagged eight wickets in three qualifying matches last week when Sri Lanka, the 2014 champions, swept the Super 12 phase. However, a back injury knocked him out of the five wicket win over Bangladesh the weekend in a match where his team conceded 171 runs.

On the low, slow wickets of the Gulf, spinners are the key, even more so when they come armed with a bag full of tricks.

“He’s a quality bowler, he’s a mysterious bowler. He’s still young. He’s still making his way in the game,” said Arthur van Theekshana, who made his international debut only in September.

“If you have not seen Maheesh, he is definitely asking some questions.”

“He has a few different balls that make you quite hesitant if you can not pick them. So it will be an interesting game tomorrow.”

Theekshana not only bowls traditional off-spin.

He mastered the googly and the carrom ball, the aerodynamically challenging delivery produced by flicking the ball between the thumb and the bent middle finger.

Arthur, meanwhile, is on a personally impressive winning run in the UAE due to his three-year coaching career for Pakistan when the Asian giants were banned in the Gulf due to the security situation at home.

He has 15 consecutive T20 wins behind his name and if he comes out at 16 on Thursday it will be particularly nice as he has also coached Australia from 2010 until he was sacked in 2013.

“We do know the wickets and with Pakistan we also had a fixed format that we played with, a fixed brand, ”said the 53-year-old South African.

“And we kind of tried to repeat it just a little bit with the Sri Lankan boys. So it definitely helped.

“Conditions do not differ too much from what we experience in Sri Lanka. So it has helped our guys too. And let’s just hope that 15 tomorrow becomes 16.”
