Mohammed Azharuddin complains to Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri for failing to attend press conference following defeat to New Zealand in T20 World Cup

Former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin believes head coach Ravi Shastri should have attended the post-match press conference after India were beaten by New Zealand on Sunday in a Group 2 match of the ongoing T20 World Cup. Indian pacemaker Jasprit Bumrah attended the post-match press conference, which according to Azharuddin is completely unacceptable.

“In my opinion, the coach should have come for the press conference. If Virat Kohli does not want to attend the press conference, that is fine. But Ravi (Shastri) bhai should have attended the press conference.” Azharuddin said during a discussion on ABP News.

“Not only can you attend press conferences after victories, you also have to give an explanation for defeats. Sending Bumrah to the press conference was not right. Either the captain or the coach must have come for the printer or someone from the coaching staff , “he added.

Asked if Kohli and Shastri do not want questions after such a poor performance, Azhar said there is nothing to be ashamed of about a defeat, but one must take responsibility.

“If you lose a game or two, there is nothing to be ashamed of. But the captain or the coach must come and explain to the nation why the team lost. How can you expect Bumrah to answer these questions. If “You’re ready to face the media when the team wins, then you also have to step forward when your team is going through a rough phase,” added Azharuddin, who has played 99 Tests and 334 ODIs for India.

India’s top order again failed on Sunday as the team was able to score 110/7 in 20 overs. For New Zealand, Trent Boult was the choice of the bowlers who took three wickets, while Ish Sodhi also tipped two wickets. For India, Ravindra Jadeja scored the best points with a 19-ball 26.

In response, the Blackcaps chased down the target in just 14.3 overs when Daryl Mitchell scored a brilliant 49 off just 35 balls.

Team India now has an outside chance to qualify for the semi-finals. They will have to win their remaining matches and hope the other results go their way. India now tackle Afghanistan in their next match at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
