Dems in disorder over failure of “Stupid Wakeness” – Internal battle brews

The Democratic Party is falling apart.

The progressives pushed the party extremely far to the left – Dems who want to win elections are trying to push back.

The Hill reported:

Internal Democratic tensions over cultural change, equality and “vigilance” boil over after the party’s dismal performance in this week’s elections.

Progressives and centrists are embroiled in a battle over how best to wrestle with major debates that have plagued the nation in recent years. Those debates touch on the most mundane topics in American life: race, gender, and sexuality, as well as policing, criminal justice, and education.

For the centrists, progressive pushes and pushes the party out of the mainstream of American opinion, jeopardizing further election disasters. The leftists, they argue, are too slippery, and too prone to confuse self-righteous social media chats with the more nuanced realities of public opinion.

On the left, the centrists are abandoning the party’s core supporters and its core goal. If the Democratic Party is not committed to making America fairer, they ask, why is it even there? Many progressives also see the centrist approach as a strategic mistake, arguing that caution and timidity suppress enthusiasm among key voice groups.

The division stuck its head out in Virginia.

Far-left Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) blamed Virginia’s loss on the moderates.

She said McAuliffe lost because he was not progressive enough.

WSET reported:

Second Term Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, DN.Y., used social media this week to tell Virginia Democrats that their gubernatorial candidate, Terry McAuliffe, lost because his campaign was too moderate.

“I know Virginia was a big bummer,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a video on Instagram. “And honestly, if anything, I think the results show the limits of trying to run a fully 100% super-moderated campaign that does not excite or stimulate a progressive base, and honestly, we are not even right. invited to contribute to that race. ”

Ocasio-Cortez then accused “moderate Dems” of enabling Republican “race baiting”. She argued it “demoralizes the base you are supposed to protect and point out, while also turning white swing voters to the right with inadequate responses or silence.”

Political strategist James Carville blamed “stupid vigilance” for the Democrats’ loss in Virginia.

The Hill reported:

Democratic political strategist James Carville blamed his party’s recent losses and poor performance in state elections on “stupid wakefulness” on Wednesday.

“PBS NewsHour” host Judy Woodruff asked Carville what went wrong for the Democratic Party in the Virginia gubernatorial race in which Republican Glenn Youngkin beat former Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

“What went wrong is just stupid wakefulness. Don’t just look at Virginia and New Jersey. Look at Long Island, look at Buffalo, look at Minneapolis, even look at Seattle, Wash. I mean, this ‘defund the police’ madness, it takes Abraham Lincoln’s name from schools. I mean it – people see it, “Carville said.

“It’s just right – it has a repressive effect across the country on Democrats. Some of these people have to go to a ‘wake’ detox center or something,” he added. “They speak a language that people just do not use. not, and there is backlash and frustration about it. ”
