Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan reached a major landmark afterwards his 15-run innings against Scotland in the continuous T20 World Cup Super 12 match Sunday in Sharjah. While scoring his fifth run, Rizwan improved on West Indian batsman Chris Gayle’s record for most runs in a calendar year in T20I cricket, which the latter set in 2015. Six years ago, Gayle scored a whopping 1665 runs in the T20I format and a phenomenal average of 59.46. His score included three hundreds and 10 fifties in 36 games, with 151 not being the highest. Rizwan, on the other hand, has overtaken Gayle and stands at 1676 T20I runs this year after his innings against Scotland. The Pakistani opening batsman has a hundred and 15 half-centuries behind his name this year, with 104 not being the highest.

Rizwan was in great shape in the ongoing T20 World Cup. He showcased his class when he played an epic 79-run unbeaten run against India in their Super 12 opening series. Pakistan went on to win the match narrowly by 10 wickets.

Pakistan then beat New Zealand and followed it up with victories against Afghanistan and Namibia.

Rizwan has made significant contributions, not only with the bat, but also as a goalkeeper and in the leadership role in the current Pakistani team.

Rizwan’s opening partner, captain Babar Azam, is not far behind with 1,627 runs scored this year and it looks good to add more as Pakistan have qualified for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup.
