Republicans promise to fight the White House, plan to pay migrants who entered the country illegally

Republicans in Congress say they will fight a White House plan to pay up to $ 450,000 in damages to migrants who were separated from their families under the Trump administration after entering the country illegally.

To the Wall Street Journal reported on the plan earlier this week, President Joe Biden called the report “junk,” only to be corrected by his spokesman the next day.

At issue is former President Donald Trump’s policy to prosecute all adults who entered the country illegally, in accordance with federal immigration laws, including those with children. The Biden administration has revoked the policy, along with many other immigration enforcement efforts.

The New York Times estimates that about 5,500 children were separated from their parents as a result of the policies. The American Civil Liberties Union and other civil rights groups have sued on behalf of non-citizens over the policy.

In response to the lawsuit, the Department of Justice, Homeland Security and Health and Human Services are considering paying $ 450,000 per person to family members who were allegedly divorced when they entered the United States illegally. The payments could amount to $ 1 million per family and $ 1 billion in general.

Fox News’ Peter Doocey asked Biden on Wednesday about the policy. Biden replied that the reports were “junk”. He said: “If you keep sending out that garbage? Yes, but that’s not true. $ 450,000 per person, is that what you say? That is not going to happen. “

He was corrected by the ACLU, which later on Wednesday said Biden “may not have been fully informed about the actions of his own justice department, as it has carefully considered and considered the crimes against thousands of families separated from their children. as a deliberate government policy. ”

Anthony D. Romero, executive director of ACLU, said Biden would contradict a campaign promise if he did not allow the payments.

“But if he follows what he said, the president is relinquishing a nuclear campaign promise to do justice to the thousands of divorced families,” Romero said in a statement. “We respectfully remind President Biden that he called this action ‘criminal’ in a debate with then-President Trump and campaigned to correct and rectify the lawlessness of the Trump administration. We call on President Biden to rectify the injustices of this national tragedy. “

On Thursday, a White House spokesman told reporters at a press briefing that the president was “perfectly comfortable” with U.S. taxpayers financing cash payments to those entering the country illegally.

Republicans say they do not have it.

U.S. Senator Steve Daines, R-Mont., Has introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization for Fiscal Year 2022 Act to prevent such payments from taking place. The amendment was supported by more than two dozen Senate Republicans. He also introduced the measure as a stand-alone bill.

In the U.S. House, Rep. Tom McClintock, the ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, introduced the Prohibition of Illegal Immigration Payoff Act to stop the process. The bill would prevent the U.S. Attorney General from making any settlement payments to illegal immigrants as a result of violations of federal immigration laws.

“Who says crime does not pay? Under Biden, it seems to be paying very well, “McClintock said in a statement. “Law-abiding, hard-working Americans have seen their purchasing power decimated by Biden’s economic policies while giving up our southern border. Paying $ 450,000 apiece to illegal immigrants as an excuse for Trump’s decision to enforce our immigration law adds insult to injury. “Congress has the power of the wallet, and that is why we must act today to stop this outrageous plan in its tracks.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-California, co-sponsored the bill with Rep. Sponsored Jim Jordan, R-Ohio and 135 other members of Congress.

“With all the challenges Americans face every day – including an unprecedented border crisis – providing $ 450,000 per person settlement payments to illegal immigrants is pure madness,” McCarthy said. “This is not only an insult to the American people, but will also exacerbate the border crisis and lead to a business boom for drug cartels and traffickers, which is already exploiting the Democrats’ disastrous border policy.”

Jordan said: “Democrats are shutting down the economy, paying people not to work, raising your taxes and now wanting to give illegal immigrants $ 450,000 checks paid by U.S. taxpayers. Our bill will ensure that the Attorney General cannot allow this to happen unilaterally. “
