New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney, one of the most powerful elected officials in Jersey, eventually conceded to Edward Durr, the Christian truck driver who spent only a few thousand dollars on his campaign.
Sweeney has refused for more than a week after being defeated in last Tuesday’s election, claiming that 12,000 ballot papers were “found” in one country.
On Wednesday, Democratic Sweeney finally conceded to Republican Durr, acknowledging there was a “red wave.”
CBS Philadelphia reported:
The president of the Senate of New Jersey, Steve Sweeney, one of the most powerful elected officials in the state, admitted on Wednesday that he lost re-election to the state Senate.
Sweeney, a Democrat, lost to Republican political newcomer and commercial truck driver Edward Durr in the 3rd District of southern New Jersey.
“Of course I accept the results. I want for mr. “Congratulations to Durr and wish him all the best,” Sweeney said during a speech at the State House complex on Wednesday.
Sweeney’s loss to Durr, who spent at least $ 2,300 in the competition, shocked government officials and left Democrats in control of the Legislature looking for a new leader.
Sweeney said his loss of about 2,000 votes was the result of overwhelming GOP turnout in his suburban Philadelphia, politically divided district.
“It was a red wave,” he said.
