Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy: Vidarbha bowler Akshay Karnewar sets world record in T20 cricket, following it up with hat-trick next day

Vidarbha bowler Akshay Karnewar put the spotlight on Monday when his team defeated Manipur by 167 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 trophy. Karnewar was in top form for his team and broke the world record for the most economical figures ever bowled in T20 cricket and did not concede a single run in the match. The 29-year-old produced figures of 4-4-0-2 and became the first cricketer to bowl four girls in T20 cricket for men. To defend a target of 223 runs, Vidarbha Manipur limited to 55 (all out) in 16.3 overs.

Karnewar kept its momentum intact and followed up with a hat-trick against Sikkim on Tuesday. He also recorded figures of 4-1-5-4. His dismissals were responsible for Codanda Ajit Karthik, Kranthi Kumar, Ashish Thapa and Nilesh Lamichaney.

Karnewar and his teammates once again defended a target of 206 runs and successfully limited Sikkim to 75 for eight in 20 overs with considerable ease and won by 130 runs.


Vidarbha was in good shape in the continued competition and is at the top of their Plate Group with 20 points from five games. They are followed by Meghalaya in second place and Tripura in third. Karnewar were in great shape and took 10 wickets in five games.

After his performance against Manipur, Karnewar spoke to Times of India and delighted in his performance. He said: “It’s unbelievable. Not to concede even a single run in the whole match is something extraordinary and I feel really good.”
