Britney Spears’s Freed From Conservatorship

12 Nov. 2021 – Britney Spears finally gets free.

A judge in Los Angeles on Friday ordered that the end to the conservatism which for years restricted the pop singer’s freedom over her own finances.

“The retention of the person and estate of Britney Jean Spears is no longer required,” Judge Brenda Penny said in the Los Angeles Supreme Court. The New York Times.

There was “no need for a capacity statement” from Spears, Penny said, noting that it was a voluntary conservatism.

John Zabel, the certified public accountant who took over the estate in September, will continue to assist with estate planning and transfer external assets to an existing trust for Spears, she said.

The news comes less than a month after Jamie Spears, Britney Spears’ father, was officially suspended as guardian of her estimated $ 60 million estate.

In October, Penny called the situation “unsustainable” and appointed Zabel, a certified public accountant, as a temporary replacement to oversee her finances. Penny said the suspension is in the singer’s best interest and noted that the verdict could not be appealed.

“Britney deserves to wake up tomorrow without her father as her conservator,” Mathew Rosengart, her lawyer, said during the court hearing.

Rosengart described her father as a “cruel, poisonous and abusive man” and said the singer wanted him removed from the estate.

“This is what my client wants, this is what my client needs, this is what my client deserves,” he said.

Rosengart mentioned details of Manage Britney Spears, a documentary of The New York Times revealing new information about her life under conservatism.

“We learned that Mr Spears did something unfathomable,” Rosengart said. “He instructed a security team, paid for by my client, to place a listening device in Britney’s bedroom.”

But in response to this, Vivian Thoreen, Jamie Spears’ lawyer, said the documentary details were “not evidence, it’s rhetoric,” CNN reported.

Today’s trial is set to begin in October to consider Spears’ request to end the conservatism altogether. Another trial is scheduled for Dec. 13 to address other details of the case. Jamie Spears’ attorneys have until Dec. 30 to provide financial records from the past 13 years, according to CBS News.

Jamie Spears has been the custodian of the singer’s estate since 2008. He was also the custodian of her person, who oversaw her health and medical issues, until he stepped down from that role in 2019. At that time, Jodi Montgomery, a professional fiduciary, was appointed as her person’s curator and remains in that position.
