Paris Saint-Germain women’s soccer team Aminata Diallo denied any involvement in a street on Friday attack on her teammate Kheira Hamraoui, in her first public statement about the incident she was detained by police this week. Diallo, 26, “hopes that the judicial authorities will complete their investigation quickly and is sure that it will eventually show her total and total innocence,” reads a statement issued by her lawyer. The statement condemned a “completely artificial proposal of a rivalry between her and Mrs Kheira Hamraoui that would explain why she would target her teammate. This theory does not at all reflect the reality of their relationship.”

She also criticized the “media speculation that has already condemned her, without justification, and she will not hesitate to take legal action if necessary against any defamation.”

Diallo’s detention overnight at a police station outside Paris after her arrest on Wednesday was also unnecessary, the statement said, “given that she could have made a statement without being subject to restrictions.”

Diallo was driving his teammate and fellow midfielder Hamraoui home near Paris last Thursday night when her car was stopped by two masked men.

They dragged Hamraoui out and hit her on the legs with a metal bar, meaning she could not play in PSG’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid this week.

Although seen as friends who were socializing and even vacationing together, police focused on a possible sports match between the two women that could explain the violence.

An acquaintance of Diallo’s was also detained in the southeastern city of Lyon, but was released on Thursday night after nearly 35 hours of detention.

Given the manner of the attack on Hamraoui and the subsequent arrest of Diallo, commentators recalled a notorious attack on American ice skater Nancy Kerrigan in the run-up to the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics.

Her rival Tonya Harding was later suspended for life after it was revealed that her ex-husband and bodyguard hired a hitman to beat Kerrigan in the leg.
