FIFA World Cup Qualifiers: England face San Marino on Monday© AFP
England manager Gareth Southgate plans to rotate his team against San Marino as the Three Lions want to secure their place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Monday. Southgate’s team will be guaranteed to take part in next year’s tournament in Qatar if they avoid a defeat in San Marino. The Group I leaders crushed Albania 5-0 on Friday and should have little trouble with the world’s lowest team in their last qualifying match on Monday. After Harry Kane’s hat-trick and goals from Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson put England ahead five times at half-time against Albania, Southgate were able to make a series of changes in the second half to rest their stars.
But he still plans to change things up in San Marino, while also acknowledging that Mason Mount and Luke Shaw are likely to miss out again as they recover from a tooth infection and a head injury, respectively.
“Yes, we will make quite a few changes, but what we have done well in the past is to maintain good performances, even with those changes,” Southgate said.
“Although it was one of the more experienced teams that brought us into the field, we still had a lot of exciting young talent out there.”
Maguire’s header for England was a welcome boost after a difficult period for the out-of-form Manchester United center-back.
Maguire celebrated this by slipping on his knees, folding his ears and sticking his fingers into it which was seen as a message that he would not be distracted by his critics.
