Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo believes the team can still reach next year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Portugal were stunned 2-1 by Serbia at home on Sunday night when they were relegated to a play-off match that will be held next year along with 11 other nations. With this victory, Serbia qualified for the showpiece event in Qatar. “Football has shown us time and time again that the most difficult paths are sometimes the ones that lead us to the most desirable outcomes,” Ronaldo wrote in Portuguese on Instagram on Monday.

The 36-year-old forward can face his last World Cup after making four consecutive appearances in the tournament since 2006.

“Yesterday’s result was tough, but not tough enough to get us down,” he added. “The goal of being in the 2022 World Cup is still alive and we know what we have to do to get there. No excuses. Portugal on their way to Qatar,” the Manchester United forward reflected.

Portugal enjoyed a dream start when the home side opened the scoring after just two minutes by Renato Sanches. However, Serbia struck back and equalized with Dusan Tadic’s attack.

Aleksandar Mitrovic then grabbed the important goal as the half-time approached and gave the visitors an unforgettable victory. Portugal will now have to go through play-off rounds for a place in next year’s spectacle.
