Australia’s Formula One star Daniel Ricciardo introduced the F1 world to the ‘shoe-like’ celebration – while drinking the festive champagne out of his shoe – in 2016 at the German Grand Prix. It has now become a sort of tradition for the current McLaren rider, and even the great Lewis Hamilton has tipped it, but he has made it clear that the taste of the champagne from Ricciardo’s trunk was not to his liking. In the footsteps of Ricciardo, his compatriots Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis introduced the cricket world to the ‘shoe-like’ celebration after their triumph at the T20 World Cup.

Australia dominate New Zealand to win their first T20 Men’s World Cup title in Dubai on Sunday. Just like their performance on the field, the Australian players’ celebration in the locker room was a sight to behold.

A video posted on the ICC’s Instagram handle shows Wade taking off his right shoe, pouring a drink into it and then throwing it away with his Australian teammates and members of the support staff cheering him on.

Stoinis, who along with Wade starred in the chase for Australia in the semi-final against England, then joins his team-mate by pouring his drink into the same shoe and swallowing it.

But by looking at Stoinis’ face, he did not seem to enjoy the taste very much and is heard saying “it’s a bit sloppy”.

The celebration was first started by V8 Utes racer Ryal Harris, but it was announced by Ricciardo at the German GP. The F1 rider will surely be delighted to see his cricket fraternity compatriots take the ‘shoey’ celebration forward.

The whole of Australia had a lot to cheer about on Sunday as their cricket team put on a dominant performance to outsmart their trans-Tasman opponents New Zealand in the final in Dubai. Mitchell Marsh, David Warner and Josh Hazlewood were the heroes of the final for the Aussies.
