Injured Matteo Berrettini withdraws ATP final, Jannik Sondaar enters

Matteo Berrettini withdrew from the ATP final on Tuesday after suffering a left-arm injury that forced him to retire from his game on Sunday night against Alexander Zverev. After one match in the second set, the Italians took a medical postponement. An emotional Berrettini tried to continue, but was forced to retire. Zverev won a strict first set 7-6 (7) in 79 minutes and took a 1-0 lead in the second set when Berrettini could not continue.

After a medical period of time, the home favorite tried to continue. But after playing one more point, he walked to the net to shake hands. Zverev climbed over the net to hug and comfort him.

Berrettini announced his withdrawal from the ATP final through an emotional Instagram post.


Now the first substitute Jannik Sinner will take Berrettini’s place. Sinner will face Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

Sondaar enjoyed the best season of his career and lifted four ATP tour trophies, including the biggest triumph of his career at the Citi Open in Washington. The Italians are 45-21 in 2021.
