Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu Miss World Championship and Commonwealth Senior Championship

Olympic silver medalist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will miss the World Championships and the Commonwealth Senior Championships which are expected to take place simultaneously between December 7 and 17 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Chanu, who earlier this year won a silver medal in the 49kg category for women at the Tokyo Olympics and is also a former world champion, withdrew from the two items on the advice of India head coach Vijay Sharma . “Our main goal (for World Championship and Commonwealth Senior Championship) is for the lifts to qualify for next year’s Commonwealth Games,” Sharma told PTI.

“We sent Mira’s entry, but her performance is not very good right now. We’re working on her jerking technique a bit.

“Her qualification (for CWG) is not a problem because she won the silver in the Olympics and she is also number one at the moment,” he added.

The Commonwealth Senior Championship was to be held in Singapore earlier from October 20 to 24, but was canceled due to COVID-19. It will now take place simultaneously and in the same place next to the world championships next month.

Twenty weightlifters from the country, including Youth Olympic gold medalist Jeremy Lalrinnunga, will take part in the tournament. Chanu, who holds the world record in the clean-and-push event in the 49 kg category after successfully lifting 119 kg in the Asian Championships last year, has struggled to stay ahead of her Chinese opponents in the jerk division. .

The 27-year-old struggled, in her own words, as she lifted weights in the jerk due to an imbalance affecting her right shoulder and back. Chanu also has dr. Consulted Aaron Horschig, a former weightlifting physical therapist and strength and conditioning trainer in the US, who helped her tremendously to win the silver medal in Tokyo.

Asked if Chanu plans to return to the US for training, Sharma said: “It is not necessary now.”

Sharma said the decision to withdraw from the world championships is a strategic one.

“She does not face a problem, but it is just that we think strategically about which opportunities to participate in and which to miss.

“She has been participating in competitions continuously for the past five years. We have prepared, but it is not enough for this event.

“She would have to take extra load for this occasion, so I advised her not to miss it,” he said.

However, Chanu revealed in an interview with PTI last month that she sometimes still feels pain while lifting heavy weights.

“The problem has been sorted out, but sometimes I still get pain in the right shoulder and back due to the imbalance. But there is a lot of improvement from before,” she said.

“There is currently no plan to go to the US because there is a World Cup in December. After this we might plan. I consult him (Horschig) online on what to do.”

Asian Championship gold medalist Jhilli Dalabehera, who previously competed in the 45kg category, will represent India in Chanu’s category at the event.
