Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer revealed on Friday what cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar told him as he handed him his first Test cap before the start of play on Day 1. With his debut, Shreyas Iyer went on to crush his first century in the longest format of the match. He reached the top score for India with a good 105 before losing his wicket against New Zealand pacemaker Tim Southee, who finished the innings with a fiver in his name. For the records, Iyer is only the 16th Indian cricketer to have scored a century on his Test debut.
After stumps on day two, the 26-year-old revealed the words of wisdom that former Indian captain Gavaskar had previously given him while giving him his first Test cap on Thursday.
“He (Sunil Gavaskar) motivated me a lot while giving me the cap, but the one thing he told me that stayed in my mind was, ‘do not look too far ahead and just enjoy yourself.’ , “Iyer said in a video shared by the BCCI on Twitter.

“Of course I thought Rahul Dravid sir would offer me the first test cap, I did not expect to receive it from Sunil Gavaskar sir. Both are legends of the game, one of them would have given me the cap, I would be happy have been.
“It’s a great feeling how everything worked out, but not happy with the way I came out,” Shreyas said as he responded to an ANI query during a virtual press conference.
At stumps on day two, New Zealand was 129/0, leaving India 216 runs behind. The opening matches Will Young and Tom Latham are unbeaten at 75 and 50 respectively.
