Indonesia Open: PV Sindhu reaches Semis; Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty Also by

India’s two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu came back from a match to beat South Korea’s Sim Yujin and the semifinals of the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament Friday in Bali. The men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty later beat Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin 21-19 21-19 in straight matches to reach the semi-finals as well. However, the other Indian in contention, B Sai Praneeth, lost 12-21 8-21 in straight matches against Olympic champion and former world number 1 Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the men’s singles quarterfinals.

Praneeth, world no.16, repulsed an enthusiastic battle of France’s world no.70, Christo Popov, and on Thursday won 21-17 14-21 21-19 in a grueling second-round match .

Third-placed Sindhu, the reigning world champion, had to work hard to beat Yujin 14-21 21-19 21-14 in the quarter-final which lasted an hour and six minutes.

The Indian will face Thailand’s second seeded Ratchanok Intanon, who beat Japan’s Asuka Takahashi 21-17 21-12 in another women’s singles quarterfinal match, in her last four power play of the USD 850,000 event. It was not smooth from Sindhu against Yujin.

The Indian confidently started chasing to a 7-1 lead before the Japanese put six straight points in his pocket to level the first game.

But when Yujin only took a slim 11-10 lead at halftime, she did not look back and won the match comfortably to seize the early momentum.

The Japanese continued in the same vein in the second game and Sindhu equalized for hold to the first seven points before the Indian improved her game.

Sindhu showed better control and authority over her shots and involved her rival in long rallies to take a 14-8 lead before Yujin fought back.

Sindhu used her vast experience and kept her nerves to level the competition. In the decision, Sindhu enjoyed the early exchanges to chase after a comfortable 11-4 lead, but the Japanese secured seven consecutive points to make it 11-11.

Sindhu experienced trouble and took her game to the next level just in time to outsmart her opponent and seal the match in her favor. The combination of Satwik and Chirag took 43 minutes to win their men’s doubles quarter-final against the Malaysians.
