Indonesia Open: Badminton player PV Sindhu loses in semi-final

India ace PV Sindhu‘s impressive campaign at the Indonesia Open Super 1000 tournament came to an end after she defeated former world champion Ratchanok Inthanon of Thailand in a hard-fought women’s singles semi-final on Saturday in three matches. Third seeded Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, lost 21-15 9-21 14-21 against world no. 8 and second-seeded Ratchanok in 54 minutes for her third semifinal run. The 26-year-old Sindhu advanced to the last four in Indonesia Masters last week and also at the French Open in October.

Sindhu, world no. 7, came into the game with a 4-6 head-to-head score, having lost twice to the Thai player in the last two events.

The Indian made a good start and moved slowly early to an 8-3 lead. Ratchanok reduced it to 9-10 before Sindhu entered the break with a slim one-point advantage.

Sindhu grabbed three straight points to march forward and did not look back when she stabbed the opening match in her pocket.

Ratchanok regained her orientation and came back thundering in the match as she built up an 11-7 lead at intervals in the second match.

The Thai shuttler snatched nine of the next 10 points from 12-8 to leave Sindhu stranded on the other side.

It was Sindhu who handed over 11 match points to Ratchanok after going to the net and the Thailand switch sealed it with a blow on her opponent’s forehand.

The world no. 8 Thai continued her impressive run in the deciding position as she ran a healthy 11-6 lead with Sindhu making too many mistakes.

Sindhu resumed with a cross lane drop, but a misjudgment at the backline and then a foul at the net meant Ratchanok continued to move forward.

The Indian had a good run of four points when she scored 13-16, but Ratchanok once again grabbed the run points and moved up to seven match points.

A net error delayed the inevitable as Ratchanok sealed the match with a precise return to the front.

Sindhu, the reigning world champion, last reached the finals at the Swiss Open.
