ATK Mohun Bagan defeated 3-0 Indian India Super League (ISL) 2021-22 at the Tilak Maidan Stadium in Vasco SC East Bengal on Saturday. Roy Krishna (12 ‘) kept his record of scoring in each derby intact as Manvir Singh (14’) and Liston Colaco (23 ‘) ensured the work was done halfway through the first period itself. In the 372nd edition of the 100-year-old rivalry, the Mariners have now won it 123 times, getting closer and closer to the Red and Golds’ 129.
While SC East Bengal started with four recognized center-backs, ATK Mohun Bagan did not play any in their XI. Darren Sidoel, a graduate of the AFC Ajax Academy, made his first start for SC East Bengal when Daniel Chima was dropped. Antonio Habas chose to go in with the same team that beat Kerala Blasters on opening day.
It was SC East Bengal who looked clear with the whistle. They even tested the Bagan defense with an early corner kick, mostly unaware of the incoming storm.
Bagan looted the right channel to hit two goals within 100 seconds. Manvir first found Pritam Kotal through whom he first crossed into the box. The dangerous Roy Krishna was left unnoticed and the Fiji player had no trouble swinging a right foot on the volley past Arindam’s farthest side to break the deadlock in just 12 minutes.
The architect of the first goal, Manvir, wasted no time in improving his side two. New to the European Championship, Joni Kauko has benefited from SC East Bengal’s Achilles heel – their left side of defense. Kauko put it down for Manvir inside the box that hit home, this time on Arindam’s neighbor.
Most likely, the deal was concluded in the 23rd minute. Liston Colaco picked up his spoon to join the festival. Arindam unfortunately came down from his mark on the edge of the 18-meter box, but just messed up his collection. Liston picked up the pieces and, with an empty net on the corner, packed into a third of the night.
Arindam had to be picked up soon as he was injured in the process. Jose Manuel Diaz also threw Amarjit Singh Kiyam into the mix. SC East Bengal looked without ideas as the Mariners continued to pick up the attacks, with some big chances going awry.
The Red and Golds exhausted their five changes with more than half an hour to go. Adil Khan, Amir Dervisevic and Chima were all brought in, but the gap in the class was wide.
Kauko remained central in ATKMB’s plan to dictate play from midfield as his teammates continued to squander chances to increase the lead. Substitute goalkeeper Suvam Sen was impressive.
SC East Bengal will feel happy that ATKMB has not found the back of the net anymore as the Red and Gold defense showed a chambolia tonight.
With two wins of two, ATK Mohun Bagan jumped to the top of the table, two points ahead of Jamshedpur FC. They play in a replay of last season’s final with Mumbai City midweek while SC East Bengal play next against Odisha FC.
