Former India batsman VVS Laxman was all praise for New Zealand youngster Rachin Ravindra after the versatile player helped his team draw the first Test against India at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. Ravindra put on a spicy performance after the Indian spinners put the hosts in the driving seat. With their game at 79/1 after Lunch, the Kiwis lost another eight wickets as Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin drove past the Kiwis’ top and middle order in the last two sessions. Because the Indian bowlers only needed one wicket to take a 1-0 lead in the series, the Indian bowlers could not violate Ravindra and last man Ajaz Patel’s defense as the match ended in a draw.
Ravindra tackled a total of 91 balls, while Patel supported him by blocking virtually everything in his path.
Speaking during the post-match program on Star Sports, Laxman said Ravindra had a “bright future”, adding that if it were not for the youngster, New Zealand would have easily lost the match.
“Credit to the young man, Rachin Ravindra, who played his first Test match, preferred over Neil Wagner, in this New Zealand team. I’m sure he’s going to have a very bright future,” said Laxman.
“It is only because of Rachin Ravindra’s temperament and calm that New Zealand have managed to level this game,” Laxman added.
Laxman also praised the visitors because they always hit above their weight when it matters most.
“Credit to New Zealand. They are the World Cup champions and have shown exactly that. One thing I have always admired about New Zealand cricket is that they always come out and give a brave, courageous performance,” he said. added.
The second and final Test will be played from December 7 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
