Rohit Sharma named team India’s captain in one – day matches and T20 matches, vice – captain in Tests


Rohit Sharma was named captain of Team India in One Day International matches on Wednesday and took over from Virat Kohli. The opening batsman was also named vice-captain in Tests in place of Ajinkya Rahane. Rohit was named captain of the T20I team last month, ahead of the home series against New Zealand. NDTV reported earlier, that an overall change of guard in white ball cricket was imminent. Virat Kohli retired from India’s T20I captaincy at the end of the ICC T20 World Cup. Rohit’s promotion to the top spot in one – day matches brings down the curtains over Kohli’s era as captain in cricket with limited overs.

BCCI has announced the decision with the 18-man squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa, with the first Test starting from December 26 in Centurion.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has also decided to nominate Mr Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI and T20I teams going forward,” reads BCCI’s tweet.

The 18-man squad for the Test matches will be led by Virat Kohli and Rohit will be his deputy. Ajinkya Rahane, whose performance with the bat has been under the scanner for a while, was included in the group.

KL Rahul, who missed the home series against New Zealand due to injury, is back and so are people like Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami, Shardul Thakur and Prime Minister Jasprit Bumrah, who all rested for the two-match series against the Kiwis.

Both Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, along with opening batsman Shubman Gill, were not selected due to injuries. Turner Jayant Yadav retained his position with Ravichandran Ashwin. Wriddhiman Saha is the back wicketkeeper after a good series with both bat and gloves against the Kiwis, while Hanuma Vihari made a return to the group after a good outing with the India A team on the recent tour through South Africa.

Rohit taking over the reins in white ball cricket could be a move aimed at giving him a fair chance to build a team ahead of the ICC World Cup at home in 2023. It brings an end to Kohli’s era as captain of the one-day team. which was a particularly successful period for the team, apart from the fact that he did not manage to win any major ICC trophy.
