Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes Usman Khawaja could replace David Warner for the second Ashes Test if the opening batsman is suspended due to injury. England and Australia are currently playing the first Ashes Test. Warner did not take the field on Friday after receiving blows to the chest while batting on Day Two of the first Test. “If (Warner) can not play, I think it’s probably Khawaja going in and opening the batting. Although he has not done that for Queensland in the last few years, he has done it for Australia before,” cricket.com .au quoted. Ponting as said.

“He’s obviously in very good shape, so I think that’s probably the way to go. I think he has enough experience, but the fact that he has not done it for a while will be a bit of a concern, he added.

The Australian opening batsman suffered a brutal blow in the same spot as he fielded from England’s Ben Stokes, which further put Warner in discomfort.

“It’s a concern that he’s not there at all. We’ll have a better idea when he bats or if he bats at all in the second innings,” said Ponting.

“I noticed that he came out after one of the breaks after he was hit and you could see that he had a small (chest) guard over that area. I then got a little worried about it because I still have him never seen with a breast screen on before, “he added.

“Even if it’s just bruising, I would think he would be out there to field, so there could be a little more to it than what we hear,” Ponting added.

At the match, Joe Root and David Malan continued England’s fightback effort while the two batsmen stopped the visitors’ ship towards the end of Day 3 of the ongoing first Ashes test on Friday at the Gabba, Brisbane.

At the Stumps, England’s score read 220/2 – with 58 runs behind. Malan and Root played unbeaten beats of 80 and 86 runs respectively.
